NEWS CENTER - Stating that the execution rate in Iran has increased, IHRNGO made a statement on 10 October World Day Against the Death Penalty.

Iran Human Rights Organisation (IHRNGO) made a statement on 10 October, World Day Against the Death Penalty. In the statement, it was stated that at least 15 people were executed by the Iranian regime on 9 October and at least 1,105 people in 2025. In its statement, the organisation pointed out that Iran has reached the highest execution rate in the last 30 years.

INCREASED BY 108 PERCENT

In the statement, it was noted that executions increased by 108 per cent this year compared to 532 executions in 2024, and the situation caused serious concerns for the international community. Reminding the "No Execution Tuesdays" protests carried out by prisoners in 52 prisons in Iran, the international community was called on to take action.

The organisation stated that only 82 of the 1,105 executions identified were announced by Iran and stressed that the information on the remaining executions was confirmed by IHRNGO through independent sources. In 2025, 544 people (49 per cent) were executed for drug-related crimes, 485 people (43 per cent) for murder, 27 people for rape. 49 people were executed for security-related moharebeh (enmity against God), efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) and baghy (armed rebellion), and 11 of these 49 people were accused of "spying for Israel". It was stated that 30 of those executed for various offences were women. According to the data, 122 Baloch, 67 Kurds, 20 Ahwazi Arabs and 60 Afghans were executed.

CALL TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

IHRNGO Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: "On World Day Against the Death Penalty, Iran is experiencing one of the darkest periods in its modern history. Daily executions continue as a means to instill fear in society. Yet the Iranian abolitionist movement stands at the forefront of this struggle. We call on all human rights organisations and the global abolitionist community to show solidarity with the Iranian people and activists today, support the ‘No Death Penalty Tuesdays’ movement, and stand with us in building an Iran free of the death penalty.”

NO TO EXECUTIONS ON TUESDAY

The "No to Executions on Tuesday" campaign, which operates in 52 prisons in Iran, announced on 7 October that 1,695 people had been executed in a year.
