NEWS CENTRE - DEM Party made a statement on the appointment of a trustee to Wan Metropolitan Municipality and emphasised, "The midnight trustee coup is a blow to the will of the people".
The police raided the municipality building this morning with tear gas and rubber bullets on the grounds of the prison sentence given to Abdullah Zeydan, Co-Mayor of Wan (Van) Metropolitan Municipality. Many people, including journalists, were detained during the raid. Following the raid, the Ministry of Interior announced that Zeydan was suspended from office and Governor Ozan Balcı was appointed as trustee in his place.
Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) made a written statement with the title "Trustee is a coup".
'WE WILL NOT BOW DOWN'
The statement reads: "This is a coup. The midnight trustee coup against Van Metropolitan Municipality is a coup against the will of the people. We condemn the raid on our municipality building, the attack on the people with gas bombs and rubber bullets, the beating and detention of children and the elderly! We will not bow down to this lawlessness. We will stand against the trustee mentality that tries to usurp the will of the people of Van! Municipalities belong to the people, not the putschists!"
