Untreated sick patlient dies in prison

HATAY - Sick prisoner denied treatment by the İskenderun Type T Closed Prison lost his life.

33 -year-old Sick prisoner Bangin Muhammed from Afrin who was denied treatment by the İskenderun Type T Closed Prison lost his life on November 12.

Bangin Muhammed, who was arrested on January 1, 2021 and sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for being a "member of a terrorist organization" stayed in the same ward with previously ill detainees İsmail Tamboğa and Sıddık Güler. After he was transferred to the hospital, Muhammad was taken from the sick prisoners ward and taken to a cell for one. Half of Muhammed's stomach and some part of his intestines were surgically removed and he was living in a wheelchair.

Muhammed who was not transferred to a full-fledged hosptial despite his many diseases, was finally sent to İskenderun State Hospital where he lost his life on November 12. His body was taken from Forensic Medicine Institude and sent to Efrin where he'll be laid to rest.

'I DON'T WANT TO DIE'

Bangin Muhammed explained his situation to lawyer Mehtap Sert, a member of the Human Rights Association (İHD) İskenderun Branch Prisons Commission, who visited him in October. Speaking to our agency about the condition of Bangin Muhammed before, Sert stated that the prisoner's medications were not given. Bangin Muhammed told Sert, "I don't want to die, but I will die here".

PRISON ADMINISTRATION CONFIRMED

Upon the news of his death, lawyer Mehtap Sert called the prison administration and asked for information about Bangin Muhammed. The prison administration confirmed that Bangin Muhammed had passed away and told Sert: “Bangin Muhammed died on 12 November. His body was taken to Adana Forensic Medicine Institute. His family took the body, but the detailed autopsy report hasn't been released yet. We cannot give information about the reason why he died.”

'HE DOESN'T HAVE HALF OF HIS STOMACH'

Sert told our agency in a previous interview the following about Muhammed, "In 2013, he came to the Döryol district of Hatay and started to work as an agricultural worker. The local court sentenced him to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of "being a member of a terrorist organization" because he was in the ranks of the YPG in Syria. Muhammed was not involved in any crime in Turkey. Muhammed is sick and cannot walk, he lives in a wheelchair. Half of his stomach and part of his intestines were surgically removed. He had 3 surgeries. His internal organs were blistered. He is urinating in his seat and cannot realize he is urinating. He cannot meet his basic needs. He dropped to 47 kilos, he cannot eat. He has swellings on his body. He is taken to the hospital, but his medication is not given. He said, 'I don't want to die, but I'm going to die here".
