ANKARA - HEDEP Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan, who announced that they changed their short name to DEM Party, said, "Our new name expresses the spirit of a new time, a new moment of beginning and the coming to life of a new word."
People's Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan held a press conference at the People's Democratic Party (HDP) Headquarters regarding the short name of the party.
'WE CHANGED OUR NAME FOR MANDATORY REASONS'
Stating that they changed the name of the party due to compulsory reasons, Doğan said: "The long name of the party was determined as Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party and the shortened version as HEDEP. The Supreme Court of Appeals objected to the short name of their party in the subsequent process. The Supreme Court Chief Public Prosecutor's Office objected to the short name of our party, HEDEP, and notified us on November 18 that some articles of our statute needed to be amended. Actually, there is no need to remember the reason, but it is useful to repeat it to make a note in history. The name HEDEP resembles HADEP and can even be confused with it; however, HADEP has already been closed, so there is no such party."
'THE STATE CONTINUES TO DEAL WITH LETTERS'
Stating that only the changes requested and objected by the Supreme Court were made in our statute, Doğan said: "We did not make any other changes in our statute. The DEM Party, as it is known today, is the People's Equality and Democracy Party, to put it clearly and broadly. The essence of our party is the people. It has been like this since the day it was founded. It must not have been understood because the state continues to deal with the letters; however, our origin is people, not letters. The essence of our party. It is a struggle for freedom, equality, democracy, justice and peace."
