KOCAELİ - Sonay Mengütay, who was released from Kocaeli No. 1 Type F High-Security Prison after 30 years, said: “I dedicate these 30 years to our people.”

 

Sonay Mengütay (52), who had been held at Kocaeli No. 1 Type F High-Security Closed Prison, was released after 30 years in prison. Her family and representatives of various democratic organisations were waiting outside the prison to welcome her with flowers.

 

‘WE ARE ALL PART OF THIS PROCESS’ 

 

Welcomed with chants of “Jin, jiyan, azadî,” Sonay Mengütay said: “I dedicate these 30 years to our people. Although I am happy, it is a bittersweet feeling because I have left my friends behind. But we will get them all out soon. As you know, a peace process is also underway. We are all part of this process. We are ready to do whatever we can.”

 

Sonay Mengütay was arrested in Erzurum in 1996. She spent her years in prison in several different prisons.
