NEWS CENTER - Attacks on forcibly displaced Serêkaniyê residents returning to their homes were protested in Qamişlo, Hesekê and Til Temir.

 

Following a series of meetings between the Serêkaniyê Displaced Persons Committee, the Governor of Hesekê and interim government officials aimed at ensuring the safe return of displaced residents, an initial group of around 410 families returned to their homes in Serêkaniyê. Some of the returning families were attacked after arriving at their homes by people who had previously taken over their houses. Footage from Serêkaniyê showed an armed group attacking some of the returning families and damaging their vehicles.

 

The attacks were protested through demonstrations and public statements in cities across the region. Protesters carried banners condemning the attacks and called for the protection of forcibly displaced families and for their safe return to their homes.

 

Protesters called on the relevant parties to ensure that those responsible for the attacks are held accountable and to guarantee the right of displaced people to return to their homes safely and with dignity.

 

The Serêkaniyê Displaced Persons Committee also called on people across the region to take action against the attacks. In a statement, the committee called for the returning families to be protected and their security ensured, and for those responsible for the attacks to be held accountable.

 

MAZLOUM ABDI: EVERYONE’S RIGHTS MUST BE GUARANTEED

 

Mazloum Abdi, General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), also condemned the attacks in a statement on X. Recalling that the return of Serêkaniyê residents was carried out in coordination with the Syrian government, Abdi said returning civilians must be protected and those responsible for the attacks must be held accountable.

 

Abdi said they were working “with the relevant parties to protect the returning civilian refugees, hold accountable those involved in these actions, guarantee everyone’s rights, and maintain stability.”
