NEWS CENTER - According to MKG’s July report on rights violations, 5 journalists were detained, trials against 11 journalists continued and 17 social media accounts were shut down.

 

The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MGK) released its July report on rights violations targeting women journalists. The report stated that July was marked by intense pressure, rights violations, judicial harassment, police harassment, and digital censorship against journalists. The report stated: “Interference and attempts to obstruct journalists also constitute violations of the public’s right to access information. Every attack against journalists, which is not an isolated incident but amounts to concealing social events, crimes, corruption, injustices, unlawful practices, environmental destruction and various right violations, is one of the biggest obstacles to revealing the truth.”

 

The report drew attention to the 2026 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), stating that Turkey ranked 163rd among 180 countries.

 

5 JOURNALIST DETAINED 

 

The report noted that in July, police raided the homes of two journalists, five journalists were detained, one journalist was arrested, one journalist was called in for questioning, and investigations were launched against two journalists. It also noted that one journalist was threatened and targeted.

 

The report noted that trials against 11 journalists continued due to their journalistic work, while also recalling that 8 journalists remained held in various prisons. The report also addressed restrictions on social media, stating that 17 social media accounts were shut down and 11 digital media platforms were blocked from access in July. 

 

‘END PRESSURE AGAINST JOURNALISTS’

 

The report called for an end to all forms of pressure against journalists in order to ensure a free press and democratic society, and demanded the release of imprisoned journalists.
