İSTANBUL - Prosecution requested prison sentence for CHP İstanbul Provincial President Canan Kaftancıoğlu , stating his opinion as to the accusations. The hearing was postponed to a future date.

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Canan Kaftancıoğlu stood trial today regarding the file suited against her due to her social media shares from 7 years ago. Charged with "insulting the President", "publicly insulting the state of the Republic of Turkey", "provoking the people into enmity and hatred", "insulting a public official because of his/her duty" and "propagandizing for a terrorist organization," Kaftancıoğlu is facing 17 years in prison. The hearing was held in İstanbul 37th High Criminal Court.

Kaftancıoğlu's lawyers requested the court to extradite the indictment, arguing that there were statements that should not be included in an indictment prepared for the case to be heard in the heavy criminal court. The court rejected the lawyers' lack of jurisdiction. Kaftancıoğlu's lawyer Ergun Özer asked for additional time to demand further investigation.

Prosecutor announced his opinion on the merits after reading Kaftancıoğlu's tweets about Hrant Dink's first anniversary, Tayyip Erdoğan and Berkin Elvan and demanded Kaftancıoğlu to be sentenced to prison.

The court adjourned the case to 6 September.
