Two Defendants Acquitted in Case of Killing of Gezi Protester Ayvalıtaş 2019-10-21 15:01:51 İSTANBUL - Mehmet Ayvalıtaş lost his life after being hit by a car during the 2013 Gezi resistance. The final hearing of the case regarding the killing of Mehmet Ayvalıtaş has been held at İstanbul Anadolu 8th Heavy Penal Court.   Ayvalıtaş was killed after being hit by a car in a protest march on the Trans European Motorway (TEM) in Ümraniye, İstanbul. He was one of the 10 people killed during the 2013 Gezi Park protests.   The two defendants, Mehmet Görkem Demirbaş and Cengiz Aktaş, have been acquitted "due to absence of negligence."   After the announcement of the verdict, Volkan Ayvalıtaş, Mehmet's brother, said, "Even if you build the largest palace of justice in the world, you would have done in vain if there is no justice in it."
