Balance sheet of earthquake getting heavier: 24 dead 2020-10-31 10:28:56 İZMİR – The number of people who lost their lives in the earthquake in İzmir rose to 24. There have been 341 aftershocks in the city since yesterday.   The work to rescue those trapped under the rubble after the earthquake occured in 14.51 yesterday continues. There are different explanations on the magnitude of the earthquake. According to the Kandilli Observatory, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.9 while Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) says the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.6. On the other hand, according to the American Geological Research Center (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.0.   In the last statement made by AFAD, it was noted that the number of people who lost their lives increased to 24. According to the information received from the Health Disaster Coordination Center (SAKOM), some of the citizens lost their lives by drowning, while others lost their lives as a result of being buried under rubble.   As a result of the earthquake, a total of 804 people were injured, 743 in İzmir, 5 in Manisa, 2 in Balıkesir and 54 in Aydın.   It was noted that the search and rescue efforts were completed in 8 of the 17 buildings destroyed in Izmir, and the work in the remaining 9 buildings continues.   Afyon, Bursa, Sakarya Kütahya, Eskişehir, Çanakkale, Muğla and Balıkesir, Manisa, Konya, Denizli and Uşak Provincial AFAD Directorates were dispatched to the region.
